Scanlon Votes in Support of H.R. 296
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) voted in support of the bipartisan House Resolution affirming the United States’ record on the Armenian Genocide (H.R. 296).
The resolution officially recognizes the Armenian Genocide; rejects efforts to enlist, engage, or otherwise associate the United States Government with denial of the Armenian Genocide or any other genocide; and encourages education and public understanding of the facts of the Armenian Genocide, including the role of the United States in the humanitarian relief effort, and the relevance of the Armenian Genocide to modern-day crimes against humanity.
“When history is ignored we are doomed to repeat it. The history of the Armenian genocide is clear and the pain felt by the Armenian community is real,” Congresswoman Scanlon said. “May this vote send a message that we stand by the truth and the Armenian community.”
Congresswoman Scanlon noted during the mark-up of this resolution in the House Rules Committee on Monday that Philadelphia is home to a statue commemorating the Armenian Genocide which is located next to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This memorial was dedicated in 1976.
