Scanlon Statement on Senate SCOTUS Confirmation Vote

Our country is in the middle of a public health crisis that has claimed the lives of more than 220,000 Americans, shuttered thousands of small businesses, left millions unemployed, and put American families at great risk.

Instead of putting the American people first and delivering necessary relief, Senator McConnell and this administration chose instead to lead through hypocrisy, prioritizing the confirmation of a new, far-right Supreme Court Justice just days before the conclusion of a Presidential election which has been underway for weeks.

This vote will have a devastating impact on our country for a generation.

This was a vote against people with pre-existing conditions.

This was a vote against women and reproductive freedom.

This was a vote against the LGBTQ+ community.

This was a vote against our most vulnerable communities.

This was a vote against the will of the American people.

While the new Justice declined to disclose how she might rule on many of the issues that will come before her in just a few days, the zeal with which the Senate Majority Leader rammed through her nomination, and the President’s statements explicitly predicting that she would vote to overturn the ACA and Roe v Wade, and support his political ambitions, should give everyone concern for our system of checks and balances.

Let us not forget what happened here tonight and channel that energy at the ballot box.
