Our Constitution Will Endure

WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, Vice Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, released the statement below following the Senate’s vote on the two articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump:

“Today, the Senate turned its back on our Constitution and the rule of law. In the face of overwhelming evidence of impeachable offenses, the Senate chose to put party before country, and to stand behind a president who has abused the power of his office, invited foreign interference into our elections, and betrayed the American people.

“I am disheartened and scared of what this president will do knowing that, with few exceptions, the Republican Party is unwilling to challenge his misconduct. I do not believe the fiction, pushed by some, that having become only the third president in history to be impeached, this president will reform his behavior. I am, however, grateful to those of both parties who withstood intense political pressure and the threat of electoral challenges to honor their oath of office and put duty to country first.

“But, we must continue fighting.

“We will continue to fight for affordable healthcare, to reduce the scourge of gun violence, to protect our families and seniors who rely on programs like Medicare and Medicaid, to strengthen education, to protect the environment and and we will continue to hold this administration accountable.

“This is a sad day for our country. While I am deeply upset by the Senate’s decision, I continue to believe that we are better than what we appear to be today and that our Constitution will endure.”
